Calne
Calne cured bacon for two hundred years, lost the trade to Danish imports, and put up a bronze statue of two pigs rather than pretend it had ever been about anything else. Its most famous meeting, in 978, ended with the floor giving way under the Archbishop's opponents, and local planning disputes have been gentler ever since. The railway closed after losing more money per mile than any line in the country, so the Bath and Bristol money now turns up by car, parks in Lansdowne Park and tells its friends it came for the Downs. It came for the price of a semi.
