Is Calne a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Calne.

Calne is safe, and a little safer than the county around it. Crime runs below the Wiltshire average. Unemployment barely registers. Overcrowded homes are rare. It is a market town that locks its car at night and then sleeps fine.

Wiltshire Police recorded 1,275 crimes in Calne in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 55 per 1,000 residents. That sits roughly 12% below the Wiltshire average. Nobody will mistake it for a crime-free village, and anyone who tells you there's no crime in a town of this size is selling you a house.

For comparison, the rate across the whole Wiltshire local authority was about 62 per 1,000 over the same year. Calne's 55 against the county's 62 is a real gap without being a dramatic one. The honest summary is that Calne is ordinary for a Wiltshire town, on the better side of ordinary.

The town itself is compact, with an average of about 4,670 residents per square kilometre across its neighbourhoods. Unemployment stood at about 2% at the 2021 Census and about 2% of households were overcrowded. Those numbers describe a settled, working town rather than a stretched one, and they are texture, not an explanation for any particular crime.

The mix is where a careless reading goes wrong. Violence and sexual offences make up about 45% of Calne's recorded crime, against about 35% nationally. That category is the largest almost everywhere and covers a wide statutory range, including common assault without injury, so it sounds far worse on paper than it usually is on the street. Calne's share of it is higher than the national one, in a total that is lower than the county's. Anti-social behaviour follows at about 20%, against 16% nationally. Criminal damage and arson, at about 8%, and public order, also about 8%, both sit close to their national shares of about 7%. Other theft, at about 5%, and drugs, at about 3%, both come in slightly below the national figures of about 7% and 4%. A town where theft runs under the national share is a town where the bike in the front garden usually stays there.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and the answer is force-wide rather than Calne's own. Wiltshire Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 32nd of 42 forces over the year to May 2026. About 34% of its cases close with no suspect identified. None of that measures how safe Calne is. It measures how likely a report is to end in a charge, and the answer is not often.

Safety is one of Calne's stronger points: crime below the county average, a largely settled town, and nothing in the figures that should put a sensible buyer off. The weaker number belongs to the force's charging record, not to the streets.
