Midhurst
Midhurst once had its own railway and its own seats in Parliament, lost both, and has carried on looking faintly pleased about it. The Tudor streets round the Market Square are all still standing, the grandest house in town is a ruin by the river that nobody treats as bad news, and the worst environmental damage in living memory came from people loving the South Pond ducks with too much bread. Come for the beams, not the commute; the last passenger train left before most of the people living here were born.
