Is Midhurst a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Midhurst.

Yes. Midhurst is about as safe as a town can be without turning into a village. Crime runs at about half the district rate. Unemployment barely registers. Hardly anyone lives in overcrowded housing. Crime does happen here, but it has trouble finding an audience.

Midhurst recorded 267 crimes in the year to May 2026. On the published figures, that's a rate of about 42 per 1,000 residents, roughly 48% below the average for the Chichester district. The rate is calculated on a population base drawn from small statistical areas, so it won't match a simple division of crimes by residents. Use the published figure.

To make the comparison concrete, Midhurst's rate is about 42 per 1,000 against about 81 per 1,000 across the district. Chichester district isn't a trouble spot either, so being well below it is a real result, not just a flattering comparison.

The town has some density to it, at about 2,980 people per square kilometre across its neighbourhoods, but in other ways it's quiet. Unemployment is about 2%, and about 2% of households are overcrowded. That's what a settled, tightly built market town looks like. Density alone doesn't explain crime, and Midhurst is dense without the numbers to show for it.

Violence and sexual offences are the largest category at about 39% of recorded crime, against about 35% nationally. That label covers a broad legal range, including common assault where nobody was hurt, and it's the biggest category almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 17%, against 16% nationally. Criminal damage and arson is about 9%, against 7%. Public order is about 7%, level with the nation. Other theft is about 6%, slightly under the national 7%. Burglary is about 6%, against about 4% nationally, and that's the one figure a buyer might reasonably note. Keep in mind how small the numbers are. With only 267 crimes in a year, a handful of incidents can move any of these shares by several points, so this mix is a snapshot of one year, not a lasting feature of the town.

What happens after a crime is reported is a separate question, and it's decided across the whole Sussex force area, not in Midhurst. In the year to May 2026, Sussex Police charged a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which placed the force 35th of 42. About 48% of cases were closed with no suspect identified. Put simply, if something is taken from your shed, the chances of getting it back are not good. None of that says anything about how likely you are to be a victim in Midhurst in the first place. It's a measure of how the force performs once a crime has been reported.

Safety is one of Midhurst's real strengths. The main worry is what happens once a crime is reported, which is more a problem with the county's police force than with the town.
