What are the schools like in Midhurst?

For anyone buying or renting in Midhurst.

Midhurst's schools are good, and the county around them is better than most parents expect. Across the county, about five in six graded schools are good or better. The town has its own secondary. There's a church primary within walking distance of most homes. Parents here spend far more time worrying about schools than the results give them reason to.

Ofsted has graded 122 schools across West Sussex, and 103 of them are rated good or better, which is roughly five in every six. Eleven are outstanding and 92 are good. At the other end, 17 require improvement and 2 are inadequate. These figures cover the whole county, not just Midhurst, so they tell you what kind of odds you're playing rather than naming a winner. Another 125 settings across the county have no published grade yet. That means they haven't been graded, not that they're poor, and they aren't counted in the figures above.

The secondary is Midhurst Rother College, which replaced the town's old grammar school, founded in 1672, and the intermediate school. Girls were first admitted to the old grammar school in 1956. Change comes to Midhurst eventually; it just takes the scenic route. For primary, the town's own option is Midhurst CofE Primary School, and nearby families also look at Easebourne CofE Primary School, across the river, and Stedham Primary School to the west. Living near a school doesn't guarantee a place at it. West Sussex sets its own admissions rules, church schools often apply their own criteria on top, and the only boundary that counts is the one in the admissions policy for the year you apply. Buyers who choose a house because the school gate is at the end of the road, without reading that policy, sometimes find out in April what the estate agent never mentioned. According to the Department for Transport's modelled journey times from 2019, the average home here is about a 12-minute walk from the nearest primary and a 21-minute walk from the nearest secondary. Both are walkable, which is more than can be said for most other journeys out of Midhurst.

The schools are one of the town's real strengths, and they give parents less to argue about than the admissions paperwork does.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
