Helston

The port that never was, still waiting·Cornwall·South West England

Helston has spent eight hundred years being the town that might have been a port, and the argument about whether ships ever actually reached it is still the most exciting thing on the agenda. A shingle bar sealed the river off some time around the thirteenth century, and the place has been quietly getting on with it ever since, which is more or less the local temperament in one geological event. It is the most southerly town in Britain, a fact it mentions roughly as often as Penzance mentions being second. Come for the granite streets and the Lizard on the doorstep, stay because leaving involves the A394 and nobody has that kind of resolve.
