Hayle

An industrial port wearing St Ives Bay·Cornwall·South West England

Hayle spent two centuries smelting copper, casting the waste into black slag blocks, and building houses out of them, which is roughly the Cornish attitude to rubbish in one gesture. The town still looks like what it is: an industrial port that happens to sit on an estuary with three miles of dunes attached, rather than a fishing village that learned to charge for parking. The people who drive through it on the way to St Ives have decided it is the bit before St Ives. The people who live in it quietly enjoy paying St Ives money to nobody.
