Pool
Pool is the bit of Cornwall that nobody puts on a tea towel, and it has never once pretended otherwise. It sits in the gap between Camborne and Redruth doing the unglamorous work of actually housing people, with engine houses and mine stacks standing about like relatives who stayed at the party long after the tin money left. Anyone arriving expecting harbours and pasty-shop bunting has come to the wrong end of the county and should keep driving west with the rest of them. What is left behind is a place that gets on with it, which is either exactly what you want or precisely what you were afraid of.
