Scorrier and Wheal Rose

The mines left, the holes stayed·Cornwall·South West England

Scorrier and Wheal Rose is what happens when a mining boom ends and nobody tells the road layout. Engine houses stand about in the fields like ex-colleagues at a leaving do, and the ground underneath is so comprehensively hollowed out that "solid Cornish granite" is doing a lot of optimistic work. It is quiet now, properly quiet, the kind where the loudest thing on a Tuesday is the A30 breathing somewhere off to the north. People who move here for the countryside get the countryside, and then discover the countryside closes at about half four.
