Camborne
Camborne dug the deepest hole in the world, invented the self-propelled passenger vehicle, and then watched the entire point of its existence get filled in with concrete. What's left is a proper working town that has never once tried to charm you, which is the most Cornish thing about it, because the rest of the county has been dressing up for tourists since roughly 1954. There is granite underfoot, a rugby club that has hosted the All Blacks three times, and a hill that a steam engine went up on Christmas Eve in 1801 while everyone sang about it. Buy here for the town it is, not the postcard it declined to become.
