Mabe Burnthouse

A granite village with a student problem·Cornwall·South West England

Mabe Burnthouse is a granite village that accidentally swallowed a university and has been politely pretending otherwise ever since. The quarries that cut the stone for half of Cornwall are quiet now, the standing stone in the churchyard has seen out several civilisations without comment, and the youngest thing in the parish for a thousand years is a campus full of people making short films about liminal space. It works better than it sounds. Nobody here is trying to be Falmouth, which is the single most Falmouth-adjacent thing a place can do.
