Flitwick

A railway platform that grew some cul-de-sacs·Bedfordshire·East of England

Flitwick is what happens when the railway picks a Domesday hamlet and the hamlet agrees to everything that follows. Ampthill next door kept the Georgian market place and lost its station, Flitwick kept the station and got the cul-de-sacs, and both towns have spent decades pretending they got the better deal. The Normans left a castle mound and the gentry left a manor house that now does dinners, though most residents know the platform far better than either. Nobody moves here for the high street; they move here because the London train doesn't stop in Ampthill.
