Is Flitwick a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Flitwick.

Flitwick is a safe town, and the numbers are calm enough to be slightly boring. Crime runs well below the surrounding council area. Most of what does get reported looks like it does everywhere else. Cars take a little more of the attention than usual. The most serious fortification in town is a Norman castle mound, and nobody has needed it for a while.

Bedfordshire Police recorded 729 crimes across Flitwick in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 45 crimes for every 1,000 residents. That puts the town close to a third below the Central Bedfordshire average. The Mount, the motte and bailey the Normans threw up here, is still the most heavily defended spot in Flitwick, and it guards a field.

Set side by side, the two rates make the gap plain: about 45 crimes per 1,000 people in Flitwick against about 65 per 1,000 across Central Bedfordshire as a whole, over the same twelve months. The council area includes bigger, busier places, and Flitwick is not one of them.

The neighbourhood behind those numbers is a built-up town of about 3,866 people per square kilometre on average, with unemployment at about 2% and about 2% of households overcrowded at the 2021 Census. That describes a town of working households with room to breathe. It describes the town, and it explains nothing about the crime rate on its own.

The mix of what does get reported is close to the national pattern in most categories. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal grouping that includes common assault where nobody is hurt, make up about 35% of Flitwick's recorded crime, the same as the 35% across England and Wales. Anti-social behaviour runs a little higher, at about 19% against 16% nationally, and vehicle crime stands out most, at about 8% against 5%. Other theft and criminal damage both sit at about 7%, matching the national shares, and public order is about 6% against 7%. In a commuter town where nearly everyone owns a car and plenty of them stay on the drive all day, the thieves have worked out where the value is parked.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and the answer comes from the force rather than the town. Bedfordshire Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which places it 36th of 42 forces in England and Wales over the year to May 2026. About 38% of its cases close with no suspect identified. That figure describes what the force manages once a crime has already happened across the whole county, and it has nothing to say about how likely one is to happen on a Flitwick street.

Safety is one of Flitwick's real strengths, a town where the crime rate is low, the mix is ordinary and the main worry is whoever fancies the car on the drive.
