Who lives in Flitwick?

For anyone buying or renting in Flitwick.

Flitwick is lived in by working families who bought, settled and have no plans to explain themselves to anyone. Seven in ten own their home. The typical resident is in their early forties. Household incomes are healthy before tax. Most people describe their own health as good, and the council area backs them up.

About 73% of Flitwick's households own their home, while about 15% rent privately and the remainder are mostly social tenants. Ownership on that scale shapes the place: front gardens get attention, residents' meetings get attendance, and a rental flat here is a short search with not many results.

The typical Flitwick resident is 42, and about 27% of residents are aged 25 to 44. The town is old enough to have a mortgage and young enough to still be arguing about the loft.

The Office for National Statistics models median household income across the area at about £69,000 a year before tax, for the financial year to March 2023. That is a two-earner figure from a few years ago, and it tells you the people buying here could afford to, then.

All of the household and population figures on this page come from the 2021 Census. About 22% of Flitwick's households are couples with children, about 10% are lone parents and about 27% are one person living alone. Within those single-person households, about 11% of all households are a pensioner on their own. The family home dominates, though not as completely as the school-gate crowd would suggest, and a good number of houses hold one person and a lot of spare bedrooms.

About 34% of residents hold a degree-level qualification, about 13% have no formal qualifications and about 2% are full-time students. The students are a rounding error in a town without a university, and the ones who exist leave for one at eighteen.

About 86% of Flitwick residents describe their health as good or very good. Across Central Bedfordshire, the rate of deaths considered preventable is better than the England average, and the share of adults who smoke is similar to it. Those two are council-area measures, set against England, and they describe the wider authority more than any one estate.

The people are one of Flitwick's real strengths: settled, working, mostly healthy households who chose the town on purpose and stayed put.
