What are the schools like in Flitwick?

For anyone buying or renting in Flitwick.

Flitwick's schools are good, and the council area around them is better than good. Nearly nine in ten graded schools in the authority reach good or better. The town has its own lower school and an upper school on the doorstep. The secondary is a short drive or a longish walk away. Parents here have less to fight about than they would like.

Ofsted has graded 52 of the 59 rated schools across Central Bedfordshire as good or outstanding, which is close to nine in ten. One is outstanding and 51 are good, with five rated requires improvement and two inadequate. Another 43 settings in the authority have no published grade yet and sit outside those counts entirely. For a council area that size, seven schools below good is a short list, and every parent in Flitwick will still want to know whether theirs is on it.

The school that carries the town's name is Flitwick Lower School, and Kingsmoor Lower School, Templefield Lower School and Russell Lower School are among the others serving the area, with Westoning Lower School just to the south. Places at all of them are handed out under Central Bedfordshire Council's published admissions rules, so a house round the corner from one buys you proximity and an application form, and nothing more binding. Look up the council's oversubscription criteria for the year your child would start, since a sibling rule or a faith criterion can matter more than the walk. "Walking distance to Flitwick Lower" is a description of a pavement, and estate agents know it.

The Department for Transport's modelled journey times, which date from 2019, put the nearest primary at about 13 minutes on foot from the average Flitwick home. The nearest secondary is about 26 minutes' walk, 18 minutes by public transport or about 11 minutes by car, and for this town that secondary is Redborne Upper School and Community College. It is the one name families plan around, whether they meant to or not. The bus figures are the ones most likely to have aged since 2019, so the car time is the safer guide to a wet morning.

The schools are one of Flitwick's real strengths, with a strong record across the authority and a town where the hard part is the admissions paperwork rather than the grades.
