Marston Moretaine

A medieval parish annexed by its own driveways·Bedfordshire·East of England

Marston Moretaine can't agree how to spell its own name, and that's still the most heated local argument since a Speaker of the House of Commons was laid to rest in the parish church. Around that old core came decades of cul-de-sacs, built for people who wanted Bedford and Milton Keynes in equal measure and committed to neither. The railway station is a mile away and named after Millbrook, so the real transport link is the A421, which everyone treats with the weary loyalty usually kept for a difficult relative.
