Is Marston Moretaine a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Marston Moretaine.

Marston Moretaine is safer than the council area around it, by a comfortable margin. Crime runs well below the local average. Hardly anyone is out of work. The biggest local quirk is a bit more anti-social behaviour than usual, on numbers small enough to wobble. Most of the drama in the village's past happened somewhere else entirely.

Police records for the year from June 2025 to May 2026 put Marston Moretaine's crime rate at about 56 per 1,000 residents, from 385 recorded crimes. That published rate is roughly 14% below the average for the wider council area.

Central Bedfordshire as a whole runs at about 65 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same year, against about 56 here. The village is the calmer end of a council area that is not known for chaos to begin with.

The neighbourhoods that make up the village are fairly built up for a village, with an average density of about 4,300 people per square kilometre across its small census areas. About 2% of residents are unemployed and about 2% of households are overcrowded. Those are descriptions of the place and say nothing about what causes crime, but they describe a village of working households with room to live in.

The breakdown by type comes with a warning attached: 385 crimes is a small total, and a handful of incidents can move any share by several points, so none of this is fixed. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal grouping that includes common assault where nobody was injured, make up about 34% here against about 35% nationally, which is close to normal. Anti-social behaviour runs higher, at about 22% against 16%, and drugs offences at about 8% against 4%. Criminal damage and arson are about 8% against 7%, shoplifting about 8% against 8%, and vehicle crime about 6% against 5%. On a total this size, a few arrests in one summer can double a drugs share, so it is too early to call that a pattern. Police.uk's street-level map shows where incidents near a given address were recorded, and it is worth a look for the streets around any house on a shortlist.

What happens after a report is a question for the whole force. Bedfordshire Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% across England and Wales, which places it 36th of 42 forces over the year to May 2026. About 38% of its cases close with no suspect identified. That is a measure of the force's results across the county and says nothing about how safe this village is. The most famous injury in the village's records, James Inkersole's lost arm, happened at Waterloo, and no Bedfordshire officer was asked to investigate that one either.

Marston Moretaine is a safe place to live, comfortably calmer than the council area around it. The only thing worth watching is a slightly noisier mix on a total too small to settle anything.
