Barton-le-Clay

Clinging to the Chilterns by one hill·Bedfordshire·East of England

In 1956 Barton in the Clay swapped its "in the" for a "le", which is the cheapest bit of French ever to put money on a house price. The village has one toe in the Chilterns, and Sharpenhoe Clappers glowers at it from across the A6 like an Iron Age relative who did better. Luton is close enough to commute to and far enough away to leave out when someone asks where you live. The French was optional; the clay stayed.
