Who lives in Barton-le-Clay?

For anyone buying or renting in Barton-le-Clay.

Barton-le-Clay is lived in by homeowners in their forties with steady incomes and settled lives. Eight in ten own their home. The typical resident is in their mid-forties. A third have a degree. Hardly anyone is a student. People move here on purpose, usually once.

At the 2021 Census, the source for every population figure on this page, 79% of households across the Barton-le-Clay area owned their home, about 10% rented privately and about 9% rented from a council or housing association. Landlords are a minority interest here, and renters a smaller one.

The median resident is 44, and about 23% of people are aged 25 to 44, the years of first mortgages and young children. The area's population leans towards people who have already done the moving and the job-hopping and now spend weekends on the garden.

The Office for National Statistics models gross household income across the area at about £69,000 a year before tax, for the financial year to March 2023. That is comfortable money: enough for a good semi with a drive, nowhere near enough to start eyeing up the orangery at Chicksands Priory.

Households split fairly evenly between families and people living alone. About 24% are couples with dependent children and 10% are lone parents, while 24% are one person living alone, half of them pensioners at 12% of all households. These are family houses, and a fair number of them have one person left rattling around inside.

About 36% of residents hold a degree, 13% have no formal qualifications and only 2% are full-time students. The mix is broad, with graduates and non-graduates living on the same streets. Student life locally amounts to a sixth-former waiting for a lift to Luton.

About 86% of residents describe their health as good or very good. Across Central Bedfordshire, deaths from preventable causes run better than the England rate, and smoking, at about 10% of adults in the council area, is similar to England's.

The people are one of Barton-le-Clay's real strengths: owners, earners and families on solid ground, with most of the area's luck already banked.
