Wapping

Old docklands, new service charges, same high tide·Greater London·London

Wapping hanged pirates at Execution Dock for four hundred years and now charges extra for a balcony overlooking the spot. The warehouses that once stored the river's cargo now store people in exposed-brick lofts, which is the same business model with better lighting. At low tide the mudlarks go down the old watermen's stairs to sift the foreshore for treasure, while upstairs the leaseholders sift through the service charge. Wapping still makes its living off the Thames; it just stopped needing anyone to row.
