Wapping's schools are among the best things about living there. Two state primaries serve the area. Results at age eleven are good. Across the wider borough, almost every school with a published grade is rated good or better. A family can live here without spending its weekends on admissions strategy.
There are two mainstream state primaries around Wapping, Hermitage Primary School and St Peter's London Docks CofE Primary School. Their pupils average a maths score of about 109 at the end of primary school, which is a strong result for a small pair of schools. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about five minutes' walk from the average Wapping home. Pushing a scooter through the school gates takes longer than getting to them.
Across Tower Hamlets, Ofsted rates 37 of the 39 schools with a published grade as good or better, so almost all of them clear that bar. Thirteen are outstanding, two require improvement and none is inadequate. Another 44 settings in the borough have no published grade yet, and those numbers leave them out. The borough's figure is a strong one to bring to a school gate in Wapping.
Places at all of these schools are allocated under Tower Hamlets council's published admissions rules, so moving near Hermitage Primary or St Peter's London Docks does not secure a child a place. Faith-school criteria and sibling links can count for more than the walk. For secondary school, Mulberry Academy London Dock is the local option, and the 2019 modelling puts the nearest secondary about ten minutes' walk away on average. Ask the council how far from the gate the last child offered a place lived last year. That distance tells you more than any marketing phrase about being near good schools.
Families who come to Wapping for the river and the Overground get a better school list than the flat prices would lead them to expect. Schools are one of Wapping's real strengths, and a family with children of school age has very little to worry about there.
