City of London
The City of London is a two-thousand-year-old town that lends its streets to bankers on weekdays and hands them back to the pigeons on Saturday. It still keeps a Lord Mayor, a stretch of Roman wall in an underground car park and a livery hall for the tallow chandlers, which is a lot of ceremony for a place where hardly anyone sleeps. Living here is like keeping a flat inside the office: the commute is a lift ride, the neighbours clear out by seven, and the pub empties when the trading floors do.
