What are the schools like in City of London?

For anyone buying or renting in City of London.

The City of London's schools are excellent, and there's exactly one of them graded. That one is rated outstanding. It's a primary. For secondary school, families look across the boundary. Few places have a school list this short or this perfect.

Ofsted has graded one setting across the whole City of London local authority, and that one setting is rated outstanding, so every graded school in the authority is good or better. There are no schools rated requires improvement or inadequate, mostly because there's nothing else to grade. A perfect record kept by a single school is impressive, and it's also a very small sample.

The Aldgate School, at Aldgate, is the one primary the City maintains itself, and the Department for Transport's modelled times put the nearest primary about a six-minute walk away on average. Places there go by the City's published admissions rules, so living a street away earns no automatic place, and the school only has so many seats for a district this small. The secondary picture is different. City families send their children to schools in neighbouring authorities such as Islington, Tower Hamlets, Westminster and Southwark, and the City sponsors academies in Hackney, Islington and Southwark. The nearest secondary is about a 13-minute walk on the same 2019 modelling, which counts as the long journey in a district you can cross on foot before your coffee goes cold. Because a City address means applying to schools run by another council, ask the City's education service how children from your part of the Square Mile have been placed in recent years.

The best-known names belong to the independent sector. City of London School, a boys' school, is one of the independent schools the City runs, and St Paul's Cathedral School is in the shadow of the cathedral it takes its name from. David Game College and the Fashion Retail Academy cover older students with more specialist plans. Not many authorities run their own fee-paying schools as well as maintaining a state primary, but the City has always liked doing things itself.

Judged on what Ofsted has graded, the schools are one of the best things about living in the City. The catch is the size of the list. There's one graded school, it's outstanding, and secondary school usually means travelling to a neighbouring borough.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
