Poplar, London
Poplar is named after a tree it ran out of, and now lives in the shadow of Canary Wharf, which at least casts a bigger one. In 1921 its councillors went to prison sooner than send the poor a bill they thought unfair, a level of civic principle the property market has since swapped for estate agents calling Balfron Tower an icon. The towers next door pay the salaries and the Docklands Light Railway carries everyone home, so Poplar gets the bankers at bedtime and the brutalism at breakfast.
