Wantage

A market town still bragging about one royal baby·Oxfordshire·South East England

Wantage gave the world Alfred the Great and has been dining out on it for over a thousand years. His marble statue in the market place looks like a man who has just been told the trains stopped in 1964. They did, and the plan to bring a station back has been a feasibility study for so long it nearly counts as heritage. Lord Wantage once gave the town a gallery of Victoria Cross paintings, and it is now a shopping arcade, about the most honest thing a market town has ever done with a gift.
