Bampton, Oxfordshire

A market town that kept the hall and lost the market·Oxfordshire·South East England

Bampton has a town hall and a village hall, and has spent several centuries refusing to say which one it meant. It was already a market town when the Domesday surveyors came through, kept the market going until the Victorians lost interest, and has been tidying up after it ever since. The railway gave it a station called Bampton, built two miles away in somebody else's parish, which tells you most of what the outside world has ever bothered to learn about getting here. These days the loudest neighbour is the Royal Air Force, and the bus takes Sundays off, like everyone else.
