Carterton, Oxfordshire
Carterton was founded by a London speculator who named it after himself and sold it to people who wanted to grow tomatoes, and then the Royal Air Force moved in next door and the tomatoes stood no chance. Burford gets the honey-stone postcards and the coach parties, while Carterton gets the big grey transport planes coming in low over the school run. The town has mostly made its peace with that, and the people who stay soon stop hearing the engines and start telling visitors which aircraft that was.
