What are the schools like in Bampton, Oxfordshire?

For anyone buying or renting in Bampton, Oxfordshire.

The schools around Bampton are good, and the county they belong to grades about nine in ten of its schools good or better. The village has its own Church of England primary, a short walk for most families. There is no secondary in the village, so that part of the day means a car or a bus. Primary is local and easy, and secondary takes some planning.

Ofsted has graded 121 schools across Oxfordshire, and 108 of them, close to nine in ten, are rated good or outstanding. Eleven are outstanding, ten require improvement and three are inadequate. Another 151 settings in the county have no published grade yet, which tells you nothing either way about how good they are. These counts cover the whole of Oxfordshire, from Banbury to the Thames meadows, so they describe the system Bampton's children are in and say nothing about any single school.

For younger children the obvious choice is Bampton CofE Primary School. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about seven minutes from home on foot. The villages that share this postcode district have their own Church of England primaries too, including Aston and Cote Church of England Primary School and Clanfield CofE Primary School, so families on the edge of the parish have more than one primary within reach. The county council allocates places under its published admissions rules, so living near the village primary helps but does not secure a place, and the faith criteria that some church schools use are worth reading as well. Read the council's oversubscription criteria for your preferred school in the year you apply. Most families never need to, and the ones who skip it tend to be the ones who wish they had.

Secondary school is further away. The two named secondaries nearby are Burford School and Carterton Community College. The same 2019 modelling gives about 18 minutes to the nearest secondary by car, about 38 minutes by public transport and about 91 minutes on foot. Bampton is good for children who can still walk to school with a parent, and less convenient once they are teenagers who need lifts. The 91-minute walk is a modelled figure, and no teenager walks it twice a day.

For school-age families, education is one of Bampton's real strengths. The primary is in the village, the county's grades are strong, and the only real effort comes at secondary age, when the journey gets longer.
