Portishead

Where Bristol parks its families and its Audis·Somerset·South West England

Portishead is where Bristol keeps the families it can't quite fit into Clifton: a marina bolted onto a flood plain, ringed by cul-de-sacs and new-builds the colour of unbaked biscuit. It has spent the better part of thirty years campaigning to get its railway back, which tells you exactly how a town that drives everywhere feels about actually driving anywhere. The whole place has the calm, moisturised air of somewhere that got precisely what it asked for, parked a second car in front of it, and then noticed the tide.
