Nailsea
Nailsea once ran the fourth-largest glassworks in the country, and the site is now a Tesco car park, which tells you everything you need to know about the town's relationship with ambition. Its most famous son sang for The Wurzels and clocked on at the cider factory, and there was a hamlet here called Nowhere until somebody bulldozed it in the sixties, a joke so dry the town doesn't even know it's telling it. Eight miles from Bristol and entirely untroubled by the fact, Nailsea is where you move once you've decided the city can keep its edge.
