Is Portishead a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Portishead.

Portishead is a genuinely safe place to live, and the numbers back the reputation rather than flatter it. The recorded crime rate runs at around 68 incidents per thousand residents a year. That sits roughly 24% below the North Somerset average. Across the whole town there were close to two thousand recorded crimes over the past year, which for a place of this size is quiet. This is a town where safe is the baseline, not the marketing.

Set against the wider area, the gap is the whole story. North Somerset as a whole records a noticeably higher rate, and Portishead comes in well under it, which is the sort of result you would expect from a settled, largely owner-occupied commuter town where most people are home by evening and the streets empty early. There is no nightlife strip pulling the figures around and no concentration of trouble that a buyer needs to steer past. The published rate is low, the volume is low, and the two agree with each other. What that does not mean is zero, because nowhere is zero, and the honest version is that Portishead has ordinary low-level crime spread thin rather than any dramatic hotspot. The people who move here for peace and quiet get exactly what the brochure implied, which is rarer than it sounds.

The blunt verdict is that Portishead is about as safe as an English town gets, comfortably below its area average and living up to the calm it sells. If safety is near the top of your list, this is a box firmly ticked.
