Petts Wood

A developer's brochure people moved into and never left·Greater London·London

Petts Wood was laid out in the late 1920s by a developer whose money ran short halfway through, and the railway line still marks the damage. The big houses went east of the tracks, and the west got whatever the builders fancied once nobody was checking. Charles de Gaulle rented a house on Birchwood Road in 1940, lasted four months and took his family off to Shropshire, which is still the bluntest review the place has had. Jack Dee grew up here as well, and anyone who has heard him deliver a sentence will recognise the local idea of getting excited.
