Hayes, Bromley

End of the line, and quietly delighted about it·Greater London·London

Two prime ministers lived in Hayes, and the place thanked them by letting a developer flatten their house and naming a couple of avenues after them, which is about as much fuss as Hayes makes about anything. The line from London stops here, so nobody arrives by accident; everyone stepping off at Hayes chose it, usually for the driveway. The City money that turned up with the branch line in Victoria's reign never left. It just swapped the frock coat for a gilet and a strong opinion about what happens on the common.
