Beckenham

South London, still pretending it's in Kent·Greater London·London

Beckenham left Kent in 1965 and has spent every year since writing "Kent" on its envelopes anyway. The Victorians who built it saw the railway coming and laid out wide roads and big gardens for people who wanted the City close enough to commute to and far enough away to pretend otherwise. Crystal Palace train on Copers Cope Road, which is as close as the place will ever come to admitting it is south London.
