Very good, and getting into one is the harder part. Nearly every graded school is good or better. Fifteen are outstanding. One requires improvement. None is inadequate. In Beckenham, the competition happens between the parents.
There are 10 mainstream state primaries in and around Beckenham, and their pupils averaged a Key Stage 2 maths score of about 107. They include Clare House Primary School and Balgowan Primary School. Harris Primary Academy Beckenham was an infants school under a different name before it became an academy, so the school on a family's old letters may now be called something else. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about an eight-minute walk from the average home, which makes the school run a walk in the park, sometimes literally.
Five mainstream state secondaries serve the area, and their pupils averaged an Attainment 8 score of about 53. Langley Park School for Boys and Langley Park School for Girls run as separate schools. Harris Academy Beckenham and Orion Eden Park both used to have other names. With two of the five renamed, a parent's memory of the secondary options can be a rebrand out of date. The same 2019 modelling puts the nearest secondary about a 16-minute walk away, so most children can still get there on foot.
Across the London Borough of Bromley, Ofsted has rated 40 of the 41 graded settings good or outstanding, which is almost all of them. Fifteen are outstanding, one requires improvement and none is inadequate. Another 48 have not had a published overall grade yet and are not counted in that total. Living close to a school does not secure a place, because Bromley Council allocates places under its published admissions rules. The useful check is Bromley's record of how far from the gate last year's offers reached at the schools you want, since a house sold as near a school can turn out to be near the wrong one. With 40 good schools out of 41, an anxious parent has very little left to worry about apart from distance.
Schools are one of Beckenham's real strengths, and the only problem worth a sleepless night is getting a place at the one you picked.
