Is Beckenham a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Beckenham.

Yes, about as safe as the rest of Bromley, which makes it ordinary. Crime runs just under the borough average. Violence is a smaller share than in the country as a whole. Car crime is the exception. Lock the car and Beckenham is about as eventful as Bromley gets.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 5,767 crimes in Beckenham in the year from June 2025 to May 2026. The published rate for those twelve months is about 87 crimes per 1,000 residents, roughly 2% below the average for the London Borough of Bromley.

Bromley as a whole ran at about 89 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same year, against Beckenham's 87. That gap is small enough to call level, and a buyer comparing the two is comparing a town with the borough it belongs to and finding them much the same.

Beckenham is densely built for somewhere sold on villas and gardens, at about 6,400 people per square kilometre on average. About 3% of residents are unemployed and about 4% of households are overcrowded. That is the texture of a busy, mostly comfortable outer London town where the large houses share the streets with plenty of flats.

The mix of crime follows the national pattern in most categories. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal grouping that includes common assault without injury, make up about 28% of Beckenham's recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales. Anti-social behaviour is about 17% here and 16% nationally, and shoplifting about 9% against 8%. Other theft and criminal damage are each about 6% here, against about 7% nationally. Vehicle crime is the one category out of line, at about 13% of the local total against 5% nationally. The wide roads laid out for Victorian carriages are now lined with parked cars, and this is the one place the numbers stand out. The police.uk street map shows recorded crime close to an exact address, so it's worth checking the road you're buying on, especially if the car will live on the street.

What happens after a crime is reported is a different question from how safe the area is, and the answer comes from the whole Metropolitan Police area. The force charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 33rd of 42 forces. About 53% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide rates covering all of London, so if your car is broken into, the odds that anyone is charged depend on the whole of the Met.

On safety, Beckenham is middling. It is unremarkable on almost every measure except the one involving your car.

Check it for your address. These figures describe the wider area, not a single street. For recent crime near a particular address, use the map on police.uk.
