Croydon

A punchline with very good trains·Greater London·London

Croydon was once London's main airport, and has spent the decades since as the place people change trains on the way to somewhere they would rather mention at dinner. The Archbishops of Canterbury spent their summers here for centuries, then sold the palace in 1781 because the ponds round it had gone stagnant, which makes them the first buyers on record to swap Croydon for Addington and call it an upgrade. It still runs the only trams in London and carries a reputation it has never entirely earned and never entirely shaken off. Nobody moves here for romance; they move because East Croydon gets them into town fast and the asking prices don't require a second career.
