What are the schools like in Croydon?

For anyone buying or renting in Croydon.

Croydon's schools are better than its reputation. Most are rated good or better. None is rated failing. The primaries do better than the secondaries. People who judge the place by the town centre tend to miss the schools.

Primary is the stronger stage. The 32 state primaries in the area average about 106 in Key Stage 2 maths, above the national expected standard. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling put the nearest primary about seven minutes' walk away for the typical home. Park Hill Infant and Park Hill Junior serve the leafier slopes east of the centre. The Minster Junior School and its infant and nursery school take their name from the old parish church, rebuilt in 1870 after a fire. Shorter lists name Woodside Primary School and Forestdale Primary School, both in the neighbourhoods this page covers. On reception day, parents in Croydon find out which part of the borough they live in.

Secondary results are more ordinary. The six state secondaries in the area produce a pupil-weighted Attainment 8 score of about 43. That is respectable, though less impressive than the primaries. Archbishop Tenison's CofE High School and Shirley High School Performing Arts College are two of the local options. Harris Invictus Academy Croydon is one of several schools run by the same academy trust. The same 2019 modelling puts the nearest secondary about 17 minutes' walk away, or about 15 by public transport. Children used to a seven-minute stroll to primary find out in Year 7 how far "local" stretches.

Ofsted has graded 47 of the 56 schools across the Croydon local authority as good or outstanding, which is most of them. Ten are outstanding, nine require improvement and none is inadequate. Settings Ofsted has not yet graded are not counted, so the result is a fair picture of the schools that have been inspected. The independent girls' school in the old archbishops' palace closed in 2025, so families who planned around it now look at other schools.

Places are allocated under the council's published admissions rules, so living near a named school doesn't secure a place there, and an expensive house doesn't secure one either. The council's past allocation distances are the thing to check for any address before you make an offer. The faith schools apply their own criteria on top of that. The admissions letter is where the plans for the school round the corner meet the waiting list.

Croydon's schools are one of its clear strengths, strongest at primary and steady at secondary.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
