New Haw

Second billing on its own station sign·Surrey·South East England

Haw is Old English for lock gate, and New Haw still treats a narrowboat working through the lock as the afternoon's entertainment. The M25 cuts through the west of the village without a junction, which suits everyone, since the road bridge over the canal already flinches at a lorry. The village's one brush with fame came when the lock-keeper's cottage played a house in First Men in the Moon, and that remains the furthest anyone round here has felt the need to travel.
