Who lives in New Haw?

For anyone buying or renting in New Haw.

Mostly homeowners in their forties with good jobs and a mortgage they intend to pay off here. Eight in ten households own their home. The typical resident is in their early forties. Household incomes are comfortable. Hardly anyone is a student. New Haw is where people settle once they have stopped moving around.

Every population figure on this page comes from the 2021 census, which counted 2,590 people in 1,058 households. About 80% of those households owned their home outright or with a mortgage. About 15% rented privately and about 4% rented from a council or housing association. In New Haw a landlord is very often the person who lives in the house.

The median resident was 42, and people aged 25 to 44 made up about 27% of the population. At 42 most people have finished moving for work and start moving for schools, and New Haw has a junior school with the village's name on the gate.

The Office for National Statistics models typical household income in New Haw at about £68,500 a year before tax, for the financial year to March 2023. That is a gross figure averaged across the village's neighbourhood areas, so tax, pension and mortgage payments all come out of it before it reaches the bank. It usually takes two earners to reach it, and about four in ten workers at the census did their job without leaving home.

At the 2021 census, couples with dependent children made up about 24% of New Haw's households and lone parents about 9%. One-person households accounted for about 25%, and within that group about 10% of all households were pensioners living alone. Families with children and people living alone fill almost the same share of the village's homes, so a road here is as likely to have a mobility scooter outside as a scooter for school.

About 38% of residents aged 16 and over held a degree-level qualification, and about 12% had no formal qualifications. Full-time students made up about 2% of the population. With no university or college setting the age profile, New Haw's population is shaped by families buying and staying.

New Haw is a settled, comfortable, owner-occupied village, and that is one of its strengths. Its residents are mostly families and long-stayers who bought here and have little reason to leave.
