Mortlake

A brewery town that lost its brewery·Greater London·London

Mortlake is where the Boat Race ends, so once a year the cameras turn up, film two boats crossing a line by Chiswick Bridge, and leave without asking anyone what it's like to live here. The brewery has shut, the tapestry works went three centuries before it, and Charles I took a chunk of the parish to keep deer in, which set the tone for royalty treating the place as somewhere to pass through on the way to somewhere grander. Queen Victoria had her own waiting room built at the station so she never had to linger, and it now sells classic cars. Most buyers end up here the same way, having shortlisted Kew, Barnes and Richmond and then noticed the stretch of river between them that nobody thought to mention.
