Twickenham

Rugby's car park with a river view·Greater London·London

Twickenham is a rich riverside suburb that gets handed over to English rugby on a handful of Saturdays a year, and its residents have long since worked out which weekends to be somewhere else. In 1808 Lady Howe knocked down Alexander Pope's villa because the tourists kept turning up, and that is still the clearest statement of local planning policy on record. Richmond and Kingston took the shopping and left Twickenham the part where people with money sit in cafes and talk about what their houses are worth.
