What are the schools like in Twickenham?

For anyone buying or renting in Twickenham.

The state schools are the cheapest excellent thing in Twickenham. Every graded school in the borough is good or better. Ten are outstanding. Results at both ends of the age range are strong. The fee is collected once, at completion.

There are five mainstream state primaries in the area, and their pupils average a Key Stage 2 maths score of about 110. Orleans Primary School and St Richard Reynolds Catholic Primary School are among them. The Department for Transport's 2019 journey-time model puts the nearest primary about seven minutes' walk from the average home. A seven-minute walk to a good primary is a rare thing in outer London, and the asking prices reflect that.

At secondary level there are two mainstream state schools in the area, Orleans Park School and St Richard Reynolds Catholic High School. Pupils across the two average an Attainment 8 score of about 63, weighted by pupil numbers. The same 2019 model has the nearest secondary about 12 minutes' walk away. A Catholic school with a primary and a secondary under one name lets some families settle a child's whole school career at the age of four, and the parents who planned it that way will happily tell you so.

Ofsted has graded 25 settings across the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, and all 25 are good or better. Ten are outstanding, and none requires improvement or is inadequate. Twenty-five more settings in the borough have not yet received a published grade and sit outside those counts. A clean sweep is unusual, and even so, it covers the whole borough, Twickenham included.

Proximity doesn't settle anything. Richmond upon Thames council allocates places under its published admissions rules, and faith schools such as St Richard Reynolds set their own criteria, so a house round the corner from the gate secures nothing by itself. The council publishes how far away the last child offered a place at each school lived, school by school and year by year. That figure is worth more than any walking time quoted in a sales brochure. Parents who read it in the autumn tend to stay calm in the spring, and the ones who skipped it tend to learn about the appeals process instead.

The independent sector in Twickenham has history on its side. St Catherine's School has Pope's Grotto in its grounds, and Radnor House stands on the site of Alexander Pope's villa. The poet's house and his basement have both ended up in the hands of the private schools, and that makes Pope one of the few residents who never had to sit an entrance exam.

Schools are one of Twickenham's real strengths. Every graded school in the borough is good or better, and the only hard part is getting a place in the one you chose.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
