Richmond, London

A royal town still charging admission·Greater London·London

Richmond is a town where the view from the hill is protected by an Act of Parliament, and the people who bought beneath it carry themselves as if the Act covers them too. Kings kept a palace here until one of them, grieving, had it pulled down and a fire saw to the rebuild, so what survives is a gatehouse and the attitude. Buyers come for the river, the Green and the deer, then spend a decade finding out that a postcode this pretty bills for everything, including the pleasure of watching everyone else pay for it.
