Isleworth

A riverside village living under Heathrow's landing lights·Greater London·London

Isleworth turns into Hounslow without so much as a sign, which suits a town that has spent a few centuries being mistaken for somewhere else. Down by the river it does a convincing Thames village, with the London Apprentice, a castle-like church tower and a duke next door whose family has held Syon since Elizabeth I signed the lease and hasn't felt the need to move. Then a plane comes over, then another, because both of Heathrow's westerly approaches run straight across the town. It's a lovely spot, as long as you can finish your sentences between landings.
