Heston

The London suburb everyone knows from the window seat·Greater London·London

Heston is where the M4 passes within half a mile and declines to stop, which is roughly the respect the rest of London has always shown it. Its moment in history came when Neville Chamberlain landed at the local aerodrome waving a piece of paper that promised peace, and the interwar semis built around the same time have aged a good deal better than the promise. Elizabeth I once demanded bread made from Heston wheat for her own table, but these days the main crop is Airbuses lined up for Heathrow, low enough to check your guttering.
