What are the schools like in Heston?

For anyone buying or renting in Heston.

Heston's schools are better than the rest of Heston. Every school Ofsted has graded in the borough came out good or better. Eight of them are outstanding. The nearest primary is a short walk from most front doors. In a place that spends most of its energy on traffic, the classrooms are where it does its best work.

There are six mainstream state primaries around here, and at the end of primary school their pupils averaged a maths score of about 107. Heston Primary School is the one that carries the place's name, and Westbrook Primary School and Berkeley Academy are among the others parents in the area will have heard of. In the Department for Transport's 2019 model, the nearest primary is about nine minutes' walk from the typical home. For a lot of families that walk is the best part of the day.

There are two mainstream state secondaries in the area, Heston Community School and Cranford Community College, and their pupils' average Attainment 8 score, weighted by the number of pupils, is about 51. On the same 2019 model the nearest secondary is about a quarter of an hour's walk away. Two schools is a short shortlist, so most Heston families end up choosing between them, or between one of them and a bus.

Hounslow is the borough behind the inspection record: Ofsted has graded 39 schools there, and all 39 came out good or better, eight of them outstanding. None in the borough is rated requires improvement or inadequate. Another 25 settings have no published grade yet, because they are new or still waiting for an inspection, and they are left out of those counts. A clean sheet across a whole borough is unusual, and it is the strongest thing a Heston parent can point to.

School places are allocated by the council's published admissions rules, which means buying next to Heston Primary School or Westbrook does not guarantee a place at either. The thing to check is the council's record of how far from each school the last child offered a place lived in recent years, because that changes from year to year with demand. Families who pick the house for the school and leave the admissions round to chance sometimes find the council drew the line a street short of them.

Schools are Heston's real strength, with a borough where every graded school is good or better and primaries close enough to walk to. The semis are what you pay for, and the schools come with them.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
