Heston is about as safe as London gets, slightly worse than the rest of Hounslow. Crime runs a little above the borough. Violence and sexual offences are a smaller share than they are nationally. Anti-social behaviour and shoplifting take up more of it than usual. Most of what goes wrong here is a nuisance, and very little of it is dangerous.
The Metropolitan Police recorded 6,760 crimes across Heston's neighbourhoods in the year to May 2026, a published rate of about 133 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 13% above the Hounslow average. That gap is modest, but it is a gap. The police's own street-level crime map is the place to check a particular road, because a rate averaged across a suburb this size can hide a parade that keeps the numbers up next to a close that hardly appears.
Across Hounslow as a whole, the published rate for the same year is about 117 per 1,000. Heston's 133 is higher, but the borough average Heston is measured against already contains most of the outer-London suburbs between the Great West Road and Heathrow.
Heston is packed tight, at around 9,700 people per square kilometre, which is city density in a place that still has a conservation area called Heston Village. Unemployment is about 5%, and the 2021 census counted about 19% of households as overcrowded. Those figures describe the neighbourhood. They don't explain the crime rate, and neither predicts what a particular street is like.
The crime mix is more reassuring than the headline rate. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes common assault without injury, make up about 27% of Heston's recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales. Anti-social behaviour is about 22% here against 16% nationally, and shoplifting about 12% against 8%. Vehicle crime, public order offences and other theft each account for about 6%, close to their national shares. Shoplifting needs shops, and Heston has 183 on the business rates list, plenty for anyone with a large coat.
Getting a crime solved is a separate question. The Metropolitan Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 33rd of 42 forces. Across the force, about 53% of cases are closed with nobody identified as a suspect. These are figures for the whole of London's force, decided force-wide, and they say nothing about how safe Heston is. They describe what to expect after a report, which for a stolen parcel means a reference number and an email.
Heston is middling on safety. Crime is slightly above the borough average, and most of it is the low-level, irritating kind.
