Who lives in Heston?

For anyone buying or renting in Heston.

Heston belongs to young working households, and half of them rent. The typical resident is in their mid-thirties. About a quarter of households are couples with children. More than a third of adults hold a degree, and more than a fifth have no qualifications at all. It is a busy place full of people bringing up children, and it is under some strain.

At the 2021 census, which supplies every population figure here, 49% of Heston's households owned their home, 32% rented privately and 17% rented from a council or housing association. So the town is split almost exactly in half. On most streets an owner-occupied semi with an extension stands next to one that has been let out for years, and the two are easy to tell apart by their bins.

The median age is 36, and 32% of residents are between 25 and 44. That is the age of first mortgages and young children, and of the people whose landlord keeps putting the rent up. There are not many students or retirees here. Most of Heston is people in the busiest part of working life.

The Office for National Statistics models typical gross household income across Heston at about £65,700 a year for the financial year to March 2023. After tax and other deductions that comes down to about £48,700. That is still a respectable income, but it is the second number that has to cover the rent or the mortgage, and in the outer London of 2023 it went less far than the first one sounds.

About 23% of households are couples with dependent children and 13% are lone parents with children. Another 19% are people living alone, and 8% of all households are pensioners living on their own, a group already counted within those living alone. Families with children make up the largest share, so school runs and pushchairs set the rhythm of the place more than commuters or the over-sixties do.

About 36% of adults hold a degree-level qualification, 22% have no formal qualifications, and only 3% are full-time students. Heston has no university and so no student population, but it does have plenty of graduates and plenty of adults who left school with nothing. Neighbours here are as likely to have finished school at sixteen as to have a degree.

In the census, 84% of residents described their health as good or very good, and about 4% as bad or very bad. Across Hounslow borough, the local authority figures put the rate of deaths from preventable causes better than the England average, and smoking, at about 8% of adults, similar to England. Those are borough figures, with Heston averaged in alongside the rest of Hounslow.

Heston is a hard-working, young and stretched suburb. Half its households are renting, many are bringing up children on a single income, and a fifth of adults have no qualifications. Buyers who want a settled place of established homeowners will find it is mostly something else.
