What are the schools like in Mortlake?

For anyone buying or renting in Mortlake.

The schools around Mortlake are very good, and the inspection record backs that up. Every graded school is at least good. Ten are outstanding. Not one has been rated below good. The schools are excellent, and getting a place at one is a separate problem.

Ofsted has given a published overall grade to 25 settings in the Richmond upon Thames listing, and all 25 are rated good or better. Ten of them are outstanding, fifteen are good, and none are rated requires improvement or inadequate. These counts cover Richmond upon Thames as a whole, so they reflect the borough's schools in general and say nothing about any single Mortlake street. Another 25 settings have no published grade yet, which means they have not been graded, and it says nothing either way about their quality. With no weak school on the list, choosing between them comes down to small differences.

Several primaries serve Mortlake and East Sheen. East Sheen Primary School, Sheen Mount Primary School and St Mary Magdalen's Catholic Primary School are the state options closest to the district. Thomson House School and Tower House School are independent alternatives for parents who would rather pay fees than rely on the admissions rules. For secondary, the nearest named school is Lift Richmond Park. Living near any of these schools does not secure a place. The council allocates places under its published admissions rules, and a Catholic primary's rules can give priority to things that buying a house cannot provide. The council publishes how far away the last child admitted to each school lived in previous years, and checking that for the schools on your list is the useful step here. The offers that arrive in April tell you whether you got the school you wanted, and the house price will not have made any difference.

Education has a longer history in Mortlake than its train service has had customers. The district's first primary school providing compulsory education opened in 1869, an infants school followed in 1890, and secondary schooling arrived in 1906. James Chuter Ede taught at the school before he was elected to Surrey County Council in 1914. He went on to become Home Secretary in the Attlee government, so one early teacher here ended up running a government department.

The schools are where Mortlake's high prices clearly pay off, with every graded school around it rated good or outstanding. The hard part is not finding a good school but winning a place at the one you want.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
